OCALA, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida Highway Patrol has arrested a man on DUI manslaughter charges stemming from a crash that killed a former congressional candidate and his family earlier this year.
In a news release, officials said Travis Lee Johnson, 31, was arrested in Marion County Sunday.
Troopers say 61-year-old William McCullough, his 56-year-old wife Renne and their 31-year-old son Ryan died January 22 when Johnson crashed his tow truck into their SUV.
The crash report states Johnson was traveling westbound on State Road 326 when he drove off of the roadway and hit two mailboxes. He then steered back onto the road and struck the McCulloughs' vehicle head-on.
The McCulloughs were pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was severely injured.
FHP says Johnson was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. He has been charged with three counts of DUI manslaughter, three counts of vehicular homicide, four counts of DUI property damage, and careless driving.
William McCullough ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat in 2016 for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
