PANAMA CITY BEACH Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -- Panama City Beach Police investigators have released the name of the man killed in a shootout with officers Tuesday night.

Police have identified the man as 43-year-old Shawn Anthony Dumitras, of Villa Rica, Georgia.

Around 11 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the 79 West Apartments in Panama City Beach.

Police were called after receiving a 911 tip about a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car that had been in the apartment complex parking lot for hours. When police arrived, Dumitras "got hostile" with them and shots were fired. Dumitras then took off.

The shootout continued around the corner in a neighborhood near the Winn Dixie at the Y in Panama City Beach. Witnesses tell us they were woken up by the sound of Dumitras shooting out the top of a gate leading to their backyard. The witnesses say Dumitras then kicked in the gate in an attempt to get away from police. He also threatened the homeowner in an attempt to get inside the home.

With the help of the homeowners, Dumitras was eventually tracked down. He was killed during a second shootout with police.

According to PCBPD, Dumitras' past includes an extensive criminal history involving drug trafficking and gun offenses.

He also had an active warrant from the United State Marshals for drug trafficking at the time of the shooting.

An independent investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement into the shooting is ongoing.

Once the investigation is complete, the FDLE findings will be sent to the State Attorney's Office which will make the ultimate determination as to whether or not the shooting was justified.
