TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Eighteen separate crashes involving 45 cars caused a massive pileup on Interstate 10 Tuesday evening.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident began just before 5:30 p.m. between mile markers 200 and 199 on I-10 westbound in Leon County.
A preliminary investigation by FHP found that a semi-truck took evasive action to avoid a collision with a slower moving vehicle. That action interfered with a second semi-truck, causing it to jack-knife and block all lanes of traffic.
FHP says the blockage led to at least 18 other crashes involving 45 vehicles.
Eight people were transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare for the treatment of injuries. There is no word on their conditions.
A motorcyclist, 40-year-old Duane Allen Washington, of Quincy, was critically injured during the pileup. FHP says Washington swerved onto the side of the road to avoid a collision and crashed into the back of a vehicle that had also traveled off of the roadway. Washington was ejected off of his motorcycle and landed in the grass median. Troopers say he was wearing a helmet.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Washington is still in critical condition.
A WCTV employee was also involved in the pileup and is recovering from her injuries.
Authorities say a heavy rainstorm was moving through the area at the time of the crashes.
Interstate 10 was closed for over five hours as crews worked to clear the roadway. Troopers say charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
