THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) -- A new Planet Fitness on U.S. Highway 19 in Thomasville is close to opening its doors.
"We've had a lot of phone calls about what was going to go in that space," said Andrea Collins, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
Signs reveal it's a Planet Fitness, but the space is bringing more than just a 24-hour gym.
"Not only does it bring job opportunities, but it's also a direct investment in the community and we're super grateful for all of that," said Collins.
It's adding more than 30 new jobs and retail space for rent.
For Price Point Car Sales across the street, it's even more than that.
"The corridor here on U.S. 19 is the busiest in the county now, and there's been more growth at this corridor in the last 10 years than anywhere else," said Tony Herring, owner of Price Point.
He says he's happy for the new neighbors, but also concerned about a busier highway.
"That increase in traffic has caused some serious accidents out here. I lost a good friend a few weeks ago," Herring said.
A visit from Herring led to new plans to help safety concerns. Herring says Planet Fitness is adding an acceleration lane and allowing visitors to exit right with traffic flow.
"They brought their own engineers and went above and beyond at their own expense to ensure public safety because that's a very crowded intersection right there," said Herring.
The community is pleased with the initiative.
"They're going to be a really good fit and really believe in family and small town," said Collins.
The Chamber says construction is expected to wrap up by the end of October.
