LOWNDES, CO. (WCTV) -- A section of Interstate 75 in Lowndes County was closed for nearly eight hours Thursday after a fiery crash involving four tractor trailers left one driver severely injured.
Georgia State Patrol says they were investigating a crash on I-75 northbound at approximately 6:29 p.m. GSP says a tractor trailer struck a guardrail near mile marker 2, which pushed part of the guardrail into the southbound lane.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office closed the left southbound lane and diverted traffic into the right two lanes.
GSP says as southbound traffic slowed down, a tractor trailer driven by 43-year-old Ivan Moreira rear ended another tractor trailer.
Moreira's truck continued southbound and then jackknifed. GSP says Moreira then rear ended a second tractor trailer.
In an attempt to avoid the collision, a third tractor trailer veered off the west shoulder of the roadway and into the west ditch.
GSP says Moreira's truck exploded, engulfing the cab in flame. Moreira suffered severe burns and was airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
The other three drivers did not sustain injuries.
I-75 did not reopen until 2:03 a.m. Friday. GSP says the crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
