HAVANA, Fla. (WCTV) -- A Gadsden County man has been hit and killed by an SUV.

It happened around 7:45 a.m. Monday on Highway 27 near Sierra Road in Havana.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the victim is 20-year-old Ariel McGinnis. They say he was jogging northbound on Highway 27 on the shoulder of the roadway when the driver of a Saturn Vue hit him.

Traquan Maxwell lives near the scene. He said, "It's a lot of cars pass by and it is dangerous because there's no railings or anything to walk by on the street. So, you're basically walking right by a car. It's basically a hazard."

Troopers say the Saturn was traveling southbound in the outside lane. While going around the right curve, the right passenger side hit McGinnis and knocked him into the nearby woods.

Troopers haven't determined exactly what caused the accident, but say the driver did pull over to give a statement.

Brian Speigner with the Florida Highway Patrol said, "Then they compared that to the physical evidence of the vehicle, the debris field that is left, the injuries. They put it all together into the report to come up with the best reconstruction of what transpired."

Troopers say the driver was on her way to work in Tallahassee at the time. No one else was in the SUV. Charges are pending.

Troopers commend the driver for stopping and urge all drivers to do the same if they ever find themselves in this type of situation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by McGinnis' family to help cover funeral expenses. For more information, click here.
