VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- A man has been arrested in Valdosta after police say he was caught breaking into vehicles outside of an apartment complex.
The incident happened around 10:17 p.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of North Saint Augustine Road in Valdosta.
The Valdosta Police Department says a citizen called 911 to report that they had witnessed an unknown man enter a vehicle and try to steal it.
At the scene, officers canvassed the area and began searching for the man based on the witness' description.
Within minutes, officers located a man fitting the suspect's exact description. Police say the man was sitting inside of a vehicle that did not belong to him.
The man was detained and identified as 19-year-old Leonard Shuman, of Ray City, Georgia.
Officers found stolen property on Shuman from two different vehicles that had been burglarized in the area.
Shuman was charged with two felony counts of theft by entering auto and booked into the Lowndes County Jail.
VPD Lieutenant Adam Bembry said, "The Valdosta Police Department is grateful to the citizen for seeing illegal activity and immediately requesting law enforcement assistance. Also, the efforts of the responding uniformed officers are recognized as well."
