BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) – Investigators in South Georgia are hoping to learn more about human remains found over the weekend.

Authorities say bones were found on private property off of Hickory Head Road, south of Dixie.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the remains were found by the landowner while they were clearing their property. Authorities are not releasing where exactly on Hickory Head Road the remains were found, but did say it was far back on private property, in a swampy area that was very inaccessible.

The bones were found Saturday night and, because of how dangerous the area is after dark, GBI officials say they were on scene investigating Sunday morning.

The remains are now heading for analysis by GBI, where officials are hoping to learn more information about who the person is.

Area residents say it's a quiet area, so something like this happening is leaving some people on edge.

"I kind of got surprised," said Lamar Nelmas, a nearby neighbor. "It's just close by, it's a good neighborhood, good territory. There's a lot of hunters out here, good hunting land. I'm just surprised, I don't know what's going on."

Authorities say, typically, they will look to see if the remains match with any missing persons cases in the area once they have more information from the analysis.

BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – A human skeleton was found in a swampy area of Brooks County just before dark Saturday, according to Brooks County Sheriff Mike Dewey.

Dewey said a landowner from Tampa, Florida was clearing hunting ground off of Dixie Head Road when he found the remains. Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The remains are believed to have been in the Dixie area for a while, Sheriff Dewey says.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrived on Sunday to assist in recovering evidence that could help identify the remains and uncover how they got there.
