TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — A person is in critical condition after they jumped out of the fifth floor of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and landed on the second story roof, the Tallahassee Police Department said.

Police got the call about the incident at 7:57 a.m.

The hospital couldn't confirm whether the patient had a mental illness or not, but it did say they were on a general medics surgical floor. Staff was in the typical patient room when the man jumped, the hospital said.

"We have a protocol for supervising patients and he was supervised the entire time at the hospital," hospital spokesperson Bill Giudice said.

The hospital said it doesn't know how the patient got through the window, since it's a fixed pane window. Additionally, Giudice said he wasn't sure if this was the first incident like this to happen there.

"We will probably find ways to improve, we always do," Giudice said. "That's what we would hope, is that. What comes out of a situation like this, is that we get better at how we handle it."

The patient's family has been notified of the incident, according to the hospital.

Police are investigating the situation.

WCTV reached out to the Agency for Health Care Administration, and it said the state is reviewing the situation.

The hospital released the following statement:

"This morning Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare had an unfortunate incident occur with a patient in the main hospital. This situation is currently under investigation and we are working closely with law enforcement.

Please know this is an isolated event and is under control. There is no safety risk for the colleagues, patients or visitors.

More information will be provided when it becomes available to preserve the integrity of the scene."
