TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- An elderly man is recovering after a fire broke out at his home in Killearn Thursday afternoon.

It happened on Fermanagh Circle around 1 p.m.

Tallahassee Fire Department spokesperson Sarah Cooksey tells us the fire started in the garage.

Cooksey said the man had just finished mowing the lawn. He parked the mower in the garage and went inside. Cooksey says the man smelled smoke and when he opened the door to the garage it was filled with black smoke.

Cooksey says the man dialed 911 and was able to escape unharmed. His dog, however, did not survive.

The garage was destroyed. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage and the attic, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, Cooksey said.
