TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Tallahassee Police Department is investigating several recent thefts of rent checks and money orders from after-hours drop boxes.
TPD's Burglary Crimes Unit says the thefts occurred at property management companies and apartment complexes. Authorities are cautioning citizens about the risks of leaving payments in exterior drop boxes and mail slots.
The thieves managed to retrieve cash, checks and money orders, and use the money for their own purposes, police say.
TPD said in a press release, "The only crime prevention tips or ideas we can offer up to apartment residents is to suggest that you hand deliver your payment directly to the office during business hours or take advantage of electronic payment solutions if offered so that residents can make a safe, secure payment 24 hours a day, without the risk associated with a physical check or money order. Please continue to be safe and vigilant and if you see something suspicious at the payment boxes please give us a call at 850-606-5800 or 850-891-4200."
Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to contact TPD’s Burglary Crimes Unit at the number above, or Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS.
