TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Tallahassee RollerGirls will start the the 2019 season on Saturday when team Capitol Punishment takes on the Muscogee Roller Girls.

"Roller derby is a full-contact women's sport," said Jordan Engelke. "There's a lot of hitting and shoving and bodies flying everywhere."

Engelke said the team is made up of an eclectic group of women, including social workers, business owners and scientists. While the rough and tumble sport is a fitness challenge, all of the teammates are decked out in full gear.

"Safety is number one," Engelke said. "One of the first things you learn in roller derby is how to fall the right way."

Engelke said the team has lost some of their elite players in recent years, with several going to play professionally. However, they are still looking to dole out some punishment in their first game of 2019.

The bout is set for 7 p.m. at Tallahassee Indoor Sports. The event is family friendly. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets for adults are $10 and students are $5. The halftime event includes games and prizes.
