TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Tallahassee families struggling to pay rent are getting a shot at Section 8 housing for the first time in years.
The Tallahassee Housing Authority is opening the wait list for the first time since 2007.
As many as 2,500 families were on that list at one point, but now housing vouchers are coming available and this time folks can apply for them on line.
'There will be no paper applications this time around, no standing outside, down the block and around the corner," THA's Executive Director Brenda Williams said. "Everyone will have a fair chance at being first on the list because after July 31st we will conduct a lottery."
Folks can apply on line from July 1st to July 31st.
The Housing Choice Program, more commonly known as Section 8, allows people to choose an affordable home in the neighborhood of their choice and covers a portion of their rent.
There are income eligibility requirements and limits on the rent. For more information log onto the Tallahassee Housing Authority's website www.tallha.org
THA has also partnered with Leon County libraries to offer applicants free access to computers at its seven branches.
