TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Thomas County Sheriff's Office introduced a new piece of life-saving equipment on Wednesday; their new drone, Inspire One.
One of its most useful features is the power of infrared. Footage that was taken a couple of months ago shows an armed robber fleeing into the woods, and the camera helped deputies and K-9's search in the dark.
"People that run at night usually go lay down pretty quickly to hide and be still and you can walk right by them and not see them," said TCSO Captain Steve Jones.
The drones make for more efficient, more cost-effective police work. The total cost is equivalent to just one helicopter trip.
"The best evidence you can get looking down onto what you're working with, then also allow the people on the ground to do their job. It's a phenomenal tool," Capt. Jones added.
The sheriff's office sees it all, from manhunts for fugitives to searches for missing dementia patients.
This aerial technology is now changing the game for search and rescue.
