TAYLOR CO., Fla. (WCTV) -- People in Perry are mourning the loss of three men who were killed in a fiery crash this past weekend.
The crash happened Saturday evening along Paul Poppel Road, northwest of Perry. The car went off the road while rounding a curve.
30-year-old Matthew York of Georgia, 33-year-old Brett King of Lamont and 25-year-old Brett Bassett of Perry were all in the car.
Patricia Wilson knew each of the three men. She says she was just speaking with Bassett last Thursday.
She says he was excited about Taylor County High School's football game that Friday; Bassett was one of the coaches. But, he would have had to miss the annual FSU-UF themed party at the Perry Golf and Country Club had the Bulldogs won.
"We were kind of glad they lost so he was going to be able to be here. But, then he still wouldn't be able to be here," Wilson said.
She added, "We decorated for it. We'll have it again one day. I don't know when."
Wilson still shaken from the call telling her Bassett died in a car crash.
"I was devastated, heartbroken, just extremely...I just couldn't believe it. It was just unreal to me that something like that could happen to such a wonderful person," Wilson said.
"The grief is felt by a lot in the community," added Joey Jarvis.
Jarvis says York was one of his best friends growing up.
"Taught me a lot about life. Taught me a lot about the kind of way to treat people. He approached life with a humble heart and was always looking to put others' needs before him," he said.
The men are leaving behind families, friends and a community in mourning.
"Having the opportunity to have known them, although it was for a much shorter time than we expected, but, certainly having known them, I'm a better person for it," Jarvis said.
"It's not going to be the same," said Wilson.
