MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Police say a man at the wheel of a Tesla was going 128 miles per hour seconds before running a red light and colliding with an SUV in Miami Beach.

The violent collision is caught on camera.

The crash happened last October at the intersection of Fountain Street and the MacArthur Causeway.

Surveillance video released by Miami Beach Police shows the SUV making a U-turn just seconds before the speeding Tesla slams into it.

Police said the SUV had a green arrow and the red light had been red for six seconds before the Tesla sped through it.

Data from the Tesla's "black box" showed the car was going 121 mph in the five seconds before the crash, and speeding up. Two seconds before impact, the car was going 128 mph. Police said the driver of the Tesla hit the brake 1.5 seconds before the crash, but it was too late. The vehicles collided with the Tesla going 93 mph.

Authorities said the speed limit for that stretch of road is 45 mph.

Miami Beach Fire Rescue crews had to extricate all three people out of the SUV, which was nearly cut in half in the crash. Fortunately, an ambulance crew was right there at the time of the crash. The surveillance video, shows the crew turning on its sirens and rushes over to the wreckage. The driver of the Infiniti spent weeks in a coma with broken ribs, spine fractures, and brain bleeding. A rear passenger suffered a broken back, four broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a fractured pelvis and right clavicle and bruises. Another rear passenger suffered a broken arm and traumatic brain injury, according to police.

Police arrested the driver of the Tesla, 38-year-old Jose Manuel Soto, last month. He is facing three counts of reckless driving/serious bodily injury.
