Youth Art Month kicks off at the Turner Center for the Arts

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- South Georgia is celebrating the young artists across the region.
Youth Art Month has kicked off at the Turner Center for the Arts. Hundreds of pieces created by students across the South Georgia region are on display inside the arts center.
The students represent about 30 different schools across the region.
Officials with the Turner Center for the Arts said Youth Arts Month is all about highlighting and supporting the importance of arts education, and having the pieces featured in a community can help inspire students to follow their passion.
"It shows a lot of support from our community, and it instills a lot of pride within them," said Executive Director Sementha Mathews. "It also gives them the opportunity to be exposed to what art is in our community and that there are careers in art. They can shoot for developing those skills, and actually aspire to be an artist."
The exhibit is free and open to the public. It's broken into three categories, featuring kindergarten through eighth grade students. It includes the Valdosta State University Invitational, in which university students judge high school pieces for a cash prize, and a competition to be featured on the Turner Center's Spring Into Art invitation.
The pieces will be on display through March 20.
