TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The defending champion Florida State softball team will open the 2019 season as the number one ranked team in the country and boasts five preseason All-ACC players.
The Seminoles topped the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) preseason poll, garnering 21 first-place votes. Only UCLA and last year's Women's College World Series runners up, Washington, also received first-place votes.
FSU's top preseason billing marks the 10th time in school history that the Noles have topped the NFCA poll.
Lonni Alameda's squad came in at number three in the 2019 Preseason USA Softball poll, despite receiving more first place (seven) than any other team, including the top-ranked Bruins (five).
Florida State is the only ACC squad represented in either poll, although Notre Dame received votes in both polls while Louisville and Virginia Tech received votes in the USA Softball poll.
Along with preseason poll placing, five Seminoles were named to the first-ever preseason All-ACC squad; infielder's Carsyn Gordon and Sydney Sherrill, outfielder Zoe Casas, pitcher Meghan King and Catcher Anna Shelnutt.
FSU was also picked to win the ACC, garnering 11 of 12 first-place votes. The only other team who received a first-place vote was Virginia Tech, who was picked to finish 10th.
