TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- On Tuesday night, Godby High basketball standout Corbin Merritt committed on social media to FAMU. The Cougars big man did it both on his Instagram account as well as his Twitter account. In the posts, Merritt thanks a coach (Gerald) Gillion at FAMU.

Gillion is not listed on the team’s website, nor was a release on his hire sent out by the university. However, a school spokesman did confirm to Asher Wildman that Gillion was hired on as an assistant to help with recruiting. FAMU did want to reiterate that the school has not hired a head men’s basketball coach.

FAMU was unable to confirm when Gillion officially began at the school.

When asked about no head coach currently at FAMU, the new recruit Merritt said, “Gillion told me FAMU wanted Rod Strickland.”

Gillion last worked at USF in Tampa. Rod Strickland who has been linked to FAMU for weeks as the school’s leading candidate to be their new head coach also was on the USF staff last year.

As it is now, Gillion is actively recruiting players to the university with no head coach signed. School A.D. Milton Overton told WCTV a couple of weeks ago that the process for a new head coach would take, “Several weeks.”

In a recent interview with The Undefeated, Strickland said he thinks he can pioneer bringing major recruits to an HBCU.

It's the first time Strickland has publicly mentioned the open FAMU position.
