TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Florida State University men's basketball team has been making the rounds. After a tough battle in the ACC Tournament last weekend, they are now gearing up for competition on an even bigger level. The team will be facing the Vermont Catamounts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The announcement on Sunday made many people Tallahassee excited ahead of March Madness.
"I haven't quite gotten the fever yet," said born and raised Noles fan Hensley Harrison. "I have my bracket sitting there and I'm not sure what to do."
"The guys have a great shot going to the Elite 8 or the Final Four," said Rick McMillan.
Both of the students and life-long fans said they were excited.
"It's been kind of cool to just get together as FSU athletics and cheer for them and see them do so well," said freshman Nina Kucheran.
Kucheran is a member of FSU's swimming team and said many of the university's athletes had gotten together to watch the ACC tournament.
However, the distance of the Noles' first NCAA tournament game is a bummer for many.
"We're a little bit upset that they're going to have to go to Connecticut to play," said Deena Creech, who has been a fan since her brother played football for Bobby Bowden in the 1970s.
The tournament seeding, where FSU was placed as number 4, also drew mixed reactions.
"I thought we should have been number one but, you know, FSU, we always get snubbed," said Brandon Dixon, who is a manager at Coosh's Bayou Rouge restaurant in Collegetown.
"I think that FSU is lucky to get a four seed," said Andy Gaskin, who is from South Florida. "I think they could have been a 5 or a 6."
No matter what the opinion is, FSU hoops has the full support of the local community.
"Guys, you can do it," said McMillan.
The team will hit the road on Wednesday, with Nole Nation hoping that Hartford is just the first stop on the way to the Final Four. The team will take the court at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The game can be viewed on TBS.
