TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — Florida State has officially named Mike Norvell as their next head football coach, following a successful stint with the University of Memphis.
Norvell led the Tigers to a 38-15 record over his four seasons with the blue and gray.
Prior to his time with the Tigers, he served as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach with Arizona State.
On Thursday, Florida State announced specifics of Norvell's contract.
His six-year contract pays a base of $26.5 million through 2025, equaling out to $4.4 million annually, nearly double what he made at Memphis in 2019 ($2.6 million).
Coaching Staff Assembly
The day following Norvell's introductory press conference, it was reported that he had hired the first member of his staff in former Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham. FSU later confirmed the news on Tuesday.
Dillingham served as Norvell's OC in Memphis in 2018.
Earlier on the same day, it was confirmed that long-time assistant Odell Haggins would remain on FSU's staff full-time.
On the defensive side of the ball, former Marshall and Memphis defensive coordinator Adam Fuller has been named to the same position on Norvell's staff. With the Tigers in 2019, he improved a defense that finished the previous year as #82 at SP+ to #35.
Introduction to the Seminoles
Norvell was officially introduced as FSU's 11th permanent head coach on Sunday, December 8.
"I’m humbled and honored for the opportunity to be the head coach at Florida State University, one of the iconic brands in college football," he said. "I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running, putting together a great signing class, a tremendous coaching staff and joining arms with our current and former players to help elevate our football program each and every day.”
Norvell called the choice to come to FSU an "easy," one, citing the direction, leadership and promise of where the university is capable of going.
"I rushed to go see them," he said about his new team. "I thank the players for choosing to be Seminoles. They chose to come here and I chose to be with them.”
Norvell was given a warm welcome from players, community members, alumni and even other coaches.
I’m so pleased to welcome Mike Norvell and his family to FSU! If you heard Coach Norvell speak today, you couldn’t help but be inspired by his energy, enthusiasm and experience. It’s a new day for Florida State Football, and I’m excited about the future! https://t.co/IHQlcJkPk8— President John Thrasher (@FSUPresThrasher) December 8, 2019
