TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- There's no question Willie Simmons has already made history at Florida A&M, as the Rattlers are in the midst of their best season since 2011.
But this weekend, Simmons has the chance to join elite company.
If FAMU beats Howard this weekend, Simmons will become the school's second-ever first year head coach to claim a conference title.
The first? The legendary Jake Gaither, who did it all the way back in 1945.
When asked about a potential monumental accomplishment, Simmons deflected praise, saying his success is due to his players.
"I just think it's about those guys as a collective group really buying into and believing that if we do it together, the outcome will take care of itself," he said. "It's been a fun ride to watch these guys grow and develop over the last 10 months but, obviously, the work's not done. We still have work to do."
FAMU's matchup with Howard can be seen this weekend on WCTV2. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
