VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- Valdosta State University is blazing its way to the national championship game.
On Saturday, the Blazers face off against Ferris State in McKinney, Texas for the NCAA Division II Championship. On Wednesday, fans helped to send them off with goodbyes and 'good lucks.'
The VSU Athletic Complex parking lot was filled with red and black Wednesday as the team hit the road.
"I need a new hat, my hat says Champions of 2012, but I need a new hat that says '18," said lifelong Blazer fan Eddie Hagan.
The Valdosta State band, cheerleaders and dancers all celebrated the hopeful football champions. This was their last chance to cheer them on before the team hits the gridiron in Texas on Saturday.
Many fans said a game like this, and making it this far, inspires the whole community, regardless of the outcome.
"They've had a wonderful year, good coaching, good character, it's a wonderful team," said Ron and Pat Bezona. "I'm excited that these boys are going to get an opportunity to go to a national championship, but many of them to fly and get to see new things."
Pat said she surprised Ron with a ticket to the championship game as an anniversary present, and said he can't wait to see the game.
For those unable to make the trip to Texas, it will be available on the Blazers' website. Stogies in downtown Valdosta will also be broadcasting the game on TV. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
