A Tallahassee man is on trial. He's accused of stabbing a man 36 times and then turning the knife on his friend.

Ours were the only cameras rolling when the survivor took the stand and described a terrifying wake up call.

Bobby Bell described awakening just after six in the morning to someone banging on the door and then a commotion in the mobile home where he was staying with his friend 57 year old Willie Stephens.

"The only thing I could see was his legs and his feet." He was on his back," Bell said

When he went to see what was going on, he testified, the man at the door started stabbing him.

"How many times had you been stabbed?"

"Three," Bell said, "my left side of the neck, right side of the neck and back of the head."

Willie Stephens, prosecutors say, was stabbed 36 times in his own home because he refused to give that man a ride.

It happened at the Meadows Mobile Home Park on Roberts Avenue in September 2012.

Now Leon Akins is on trial. He's accused of killing Stephens and attacking Bell.

"He (Bell) was never able to identify who was in the trailer with him and Mr. Stephens," defense attorney Chuck Collins told the jury.

Defense attorneys pointed out that Bell could not pick Akins out of a photo line up and initially told a neighbor that he suspected someone else.

"He said his name as Shawn," neighbor Carol Coefield testified. She and her mother grabbed towels and called 911 when Bell ran to their home for help that morning.

Prosecutors contend Akins killed Stephens, sped off in his truck and still had Stephens blood on his shorts when he was caught.

Akins trial is expected to last through Thursday. We'll keep you posted on a verdict.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Leon Akins is now on trial for murder.

Attorneys made their opening statements in the case this morning.

Akins is accused of stabbing Willie Stephens 36 times after Stephens refused to give him a ride one morning in September 2012.

Prosecutors say Akins stabbed Stephens and when Stephens' friend tried to intervene Akins stabbed him too.

Prosecutors contend Akins stole Stephens' GMC Jimmy and tried to sell the speakers out of it afterward. Prosecutors say Akins later abandoned the truck and set it on fire.

Prosecutors say they have a DNA match to prove Stephens' blood was on the shorts Akins was wearing when he was arrested.

Defense attorneys say the stabbing took place the morning after a party at Stephens mobile home.

Defense attorneys claim the friend who tried to intervene cannot identify Akins as the killer and claim he actually named someone else.

The trial is expected to last through Thursday.
