City to Host Town Hall Meeting on FAMU Way Project

By  |

To further engage the public on the proposed FAMU Way extension project, the City of Tallahassee will hold a town hall meeting next week. The event will be held on Thursday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Walker-Ford Community Center gym, 2301 Pasco Street. The town hall meeting is open to the public and free of charge.

The proposed FAMU Way extension involves building a new two-lane roadway between Lake Bradford Road and South Adams Street, with a goal of making it one of the most attractive roads in Tallahassee. To do so, many amenities have been proposed to enhance the project, including a bicycle / pedestrian path, sidewalks, on-street parking and other features such as a linear park, stormwater runoff controls and coordination with the Blueprint 2000 Capital Cascade Trail network. Staff anticipates taking route and conceptual design recommendations to the City Commission by mid-summer.

The town hall format provides an opportunity for residents to ask questions, share suggestions and voice any concerns they may have about the project. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by City staff on the process thus far, followed by a question and answer session. Topics include route options, road design options, ditch/canal treatment options, greenway and recreational options and property information. This format was chosen based on feedback received at the FAMU Way Community Breakfast, held in January.

Citizen input at this stage is vital. To encourage involvement in the project and attendance at the town hall, the City has mailed postcards to approximately 3,000 households in the vicinity of the project, contacted adjacent property owners via personal visits and letters and provided tours of the area to local media outlets and interested community partners.
