Gadsden County, FL - "Congratulations! You are the Teacher of the Year!" Cheers erupted as those words rang out in the middle of class Friday morning.

Melisa Brown-Horton was named the 2015 Gadsden County Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Reginald James and administrators surprised her in her classroom Friday morning.

Brown-Horton says, "It feels really good. It feels like all of my hard work and long hours have paid off and someone is able to see what I do."

Brown-Horton has been in education for 20 years. She's taught everything from Pre-K to 8th grade. This is her first year as a sixth grade teacher at Havana Middle School.

She says, "To be in a small district like Gadsden County, means I'm giving back. So, when I look in the faces of my students and I see the light bulb go off, I feel good. I can see the reward then."

The district administrators hopped in an RV to their next surprise. The next stop was East Gadsden High School.

Danielle Anderson was named "Rookie Teacher of the Year." This is the Chemistry teacher's first full year in the classroom.

She says, "I've experienced growth. I've had a myriad of emotions. Elated when my students actually grasp concepts and the feeling that I'm able to plant knowledge into the youth, it's just overwhelming."

East Gadsden was the last stop for the RV, but, it wasn't the last award. That's because the school had a two-for-one.

Lakysha Perkins won "School Employee of the Year." Perkins is the administrative assistant to the principal. A group of loved ones joined in with school officials to congratulate her.

She says, "I'm overwhelmed. I feel that my daily charge that I give myself to give my very best to the students of Gadsden County is definitely being seen."

The three women will now represent the district in the statewide competition.
