Phone Scam Predators Pose as Publisher's Clearing House

TIFTON, Ga. -- The Tifton Police Department wants citizens to be aware of a new phone scam in which the scammers pose as representatives from the Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes.

The Tifton Police Department tells Eyewitness News that the scam work like this:

Scammers call the victim and tell them that they have won $950,000 in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes. Victims are then told that before they can get it, they have to pay the required taxes. The first victim was told to pay $950.00. The second victim was told to pay $800.00 for Federal taxes and $800.00 for the State of Georgia. The man stays on the phone with them while they get a MoneyGram and get it processed. Victims are out of their money as soon as that happens.

At least two local citizens have fallen prey to this scam in the last few days.
