TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three Seminole Soccer players and Assistant Coach Paul Rogers traveled to Europe this month for the opportunity to join the U.S. Women’s National Teams in two tournaments. Tiffany McCarty, Toni Pressley and Casey Short played for the U.S. Women’s U-20 National Team at the 10 Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, while Rogers joined the U.S. Women’s National Team at the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
The U.S. Women’s U-20 National Team played three matches over five days against Norway, France and Germany, finishing with a 1-1-1 record in the tournament. Short and Pressley started the first match against Norway, with Short assisting on a goal by Sydney Leroux, as the team went on to win 3-2. Short and McCarty started the second match against France with Short coming up big for Team U.S.A. Down by one with a minute remaining in the match, the midfielder intercepted a French pass and shot near the top of the penalty box, connecting for the game tying goal.
Short’s contribution did not go unnoticed, as U.S. Head Coach Jillian Ellis remarked, “Casey’s goal was a fantastic run and she showed great composure in the box.”
The match against France ended in a tie. The United States concluded the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Germany.
Four hundred miles to the east of La Manga, Spain, Rogers was serving as an adviser to the goalkeepers (being more descriptive) for the U.S. Women’s National Team during the Algarve Cup. The team won its first three matches in the tournament and made it to the finals for the seventh consecutive year. Despite falling in penalty kicks to Sweden in the title game, Coach Rogers’ goalkeeping guidance served the team well as Hope Solo earned Best Player of the tournament accolades, the first by a goalkeeper in 14 years. Solo finished the tournament with 12 saves and allowed only one goal.
McCarty, Pressley, Short and Rogers are back with the Seminole Soccer Team as they prepare for this Saturday’s home match against UCF at 4:00 p.m. The Seminoles will also take to the field next Saturday, March 28 when they host Auburn at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the Auburn match, the Soccer Complex will feature an Alumni game with past Seminole Soccer greats beginning at 12 noon.
