Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State assistant men’s basketball coach Nick Gast has been promoted to associate head coach, according to an announcement made by Blazer head coach Mike Helfer on Tuesday.
Gast is entering his third season on the Valdosta State staff, having helped the Blazer squad to a 42-19 mark during his first two years. He has been instrumental in the VSU recruiting efforts during his two seasons while also coaching the Valdosta State post players. His tutelage was instrumental in forward Tyrone Curnell earning All-America honors in 2009 while he also coached Devario Hudson to All-Region recognition during the 2007-08 season.
“Nick has been a tremendous asset to my coaching staff,” said Helfer in making the announcement. “He represents Valdosta State and our athletic department as well as anyone due to his playing experience here and his coaching experience overall.”
Gast came to Valdosta State from Southeastern Louisiana, where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons. He also served as the head boy’s basketball coach at Clinch County High for one season and was a graduate assistant under for Blazer head coach Jim Yarborough for two years.
Gast was a four-year starter for the Blazers and was named to the All-Gulf South Conference team in 2001 and 2002. He finished his career with 1,094 points and starred in the classroom as he was named to the GSC All-Academic team in 2002.
“I honestly believe Nick is one of the top assistants in all of Division II,” Helfer concluded. “I’m happy to give him this promotion as it directly reflects his value to our program.”
