TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Redshirt freshman Alexa Delzuio paced the No. 15 Florida State women's basketball team with 15 points as the Seminoles took down Valdosta State, 70-36, in an exhibition game Sunday at the Tucker Center. The Seminoles will open their 2009-10 regular season November 13 when North Florida visits Tallahassee for a 7 p.m. tip.
The Seminoles took care of business on the defensive end Sunday afternoon as they held Valdosta State to just 26.2 percent shooting on the day and did it right from the start.
FSU took a 22-8 lead on a Chasity Clayton lay in with 8:23 to play in the first half, thanks in large part to an 11-2 that was fueled by Jacinta Monroe and Christian Hunnicutt who each had four points in the stretch.
The Seminole defense forced Valdosta State into 16 first half turnovers which resulted in 17 points on the other end as FSU entered the break with a 39-14 advantage. The stifling defense held the Blazers scoreless the final 3:26 of the opening stanza and the 'Noles carried the momentum into the second half.
The Blazers would cut into the Seminole lead midway through the second half when Leschelle Matthews connected on a jumper with 8:46 to play but Alexa Deluzio quickly changed that with a layup of her own.
The basket was one of seven that the redshirt freshman would hit on the day as Deluzio finished the day with a game-high 15 points in her first action as a Seminole. Deluzio's basket started a 7-2 run for FSU that quickly put the game out of reach for good.
Alysha Harvin and Christian Hunnicutt each finished with 11 points and three rebounds, while freshman Leonor Rodriguez may have turned in the most impressive performance of the day with eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.
The Seminoles will return to the court next Friday when they open the 2009-10 regular season against North Florida at 7 p.m. November 13.
