TCC Basketball Flies in Wing Zone Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 6, 2009) – FCCAA No. 1/NJCAA No. 7 Tallahassee Community College defeated the College of Coastal Georgia, 74-54, in Friday’s final game at the Wing Zone Tip-off Classic.

With the win, TCC (2-0) ended the Classic as the only team to win both games. Coastal Georgia (1-3) split its two games, as did Middle Georgia College, who defeated Enterprise-Ozark (Ala.) Community College, 102-67, in Friday’s first game.

After scoring 104 points in Thursday’s season opener against Middle Georgia, it took most of the first half for the Eagles to begin hitting on all cylinders in Friday's tilt.

Trailing 23-18, the Eagles outscored the Mariners 14-1 run during a span of 2:47 to grab a 32-24 at the 4:29 mark. TCC later scored the final 11 points of the first half and carried a 46-28 lead to the locker room.

The Eagles’ lead reached 21 in the early stages of the second half, only to see Coastal Georgia score nine unanswered to pull with 12, 51-39, with 14:58 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Mariners would get.

TCC gradually extended its lead, then put the game away with an 11-0 run to take a 72-47 advantage, its largest of the night, with 6:27 left.

For the second straight night, the Eagles had four players reach double-figures. Bernard James paced TCC with 17 points and 10 rebounds – his second double-double in as many nights. Marvell Waithe added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Juevol Myles came off the bench to score 13 and Hugh Robertson tossed in 11.

Defensively, the Eagles limited Coastal Georgia to 29.3 percent (22-of-75) shooting from the field and held standout guard Antonio Tribble to only 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. TCC only dominated the boards, outrebounding Coastal Georgia, 59-41.

Johathan Brooks led the Mariners with 14 points.

TCC begins a four-game road trip on Tuesday when it travels to Barnesville, Ga., for a 7:30 p.m. match-up against Gordon (Ga.) College.
