Florida Jumps into USA Track Championship Spotlight

EUGENE, Ore. - Florida jumpers Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Will Claye (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished 1-2 in the men’s triple jump at the USA Championships Thursday to highlight a strong opening day by a contingent of Gators at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Both have now qualified for the U.S. team to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, Aug. 27-Sept. 4, 2011.

Taylor, the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Champion in the men’s triple jump, claimed the event at the USA Championships on Thursday with a winning leap of 17.49m/57-4.75 (+3.5). Claye, the 2011 NCAA Indoor Champion in the men’s triple jump, was second overall at USAs with a jump of 17.09m/56-1 (+2.4).

Sophomore sprinter Tony McQuay (Riviera Beach, Fla.) charted the fastest time in the first round of the men’s 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 45.25 to place first overall. The semifinal round will be contested at 8:45 p.m. ET Friday.

Junior sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) and senior sprinter Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) each advanced in the men’s 100-meter dash. Demps won his heat and placed fourth overall in a time of 10.04 (+0.7), while Wilks was 16th in a time of 10.24 (+0.7). The semifinal round will be contested at 7:25 p.m. ET Friday.
