INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana Republicans eager for a rare legal victory in their efforts to restrict abortion rights are seeking to outlaw a second-trimester procedure, a ban that courts have struck down in seven other states.

The leader of an Indiana House committee says it will soon consider a bill that would ban dilation and evacuation abortions, which the legislation calls "dismemberment abortion."

Republicans are hopeful Justice Brett Kavanaugh's addition has pushed the U.S. Supreme Court further to the right on abortion questions.

Abortion-rights groups argue that banning the procedure used for second trimester abortions wrongly interferes with private medical decisions.

State records show the procedure accounted for 27 of the nearly 7,800 abortions performed in Indiana during 2017.
