BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) -- A man who allegedly crashed his car while fleeing from police and then left a child alone in the wrecked vehicle has been arrested in Decatur County.

Bainbridge Public Safety says it received an anonymous tip around 4:00 a.m. Sunday that the suspect, Aaron Jones, was headed to the Circle K on Tallahassee Highway.

BPS officers and deputies with the Decatur County Sheriff's Office responded to the gas station and surrounded a vehicle that pulled into the parking lot just after 4:00 a.m. BPS says Jones was the passenger in the vehicle and surrendered to authorities without incident.

A search of the car led to the discovery of a book bag, which contained a firearm and magazine, Ecstasy pills, scales and 9.5 ounces of marijuana.

Jones was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with intent to commit a crime and possession of illegal drugs.

Law enforcement says Jones has outstanding warrants and a probation violation, and has been wanted since September 4.

Jones is accused of speeding away from a traffic stop in Bainbridge before crashing the car into a fence and abandoning the wrecked vehicle. Police found a young child alone and crying in the backseat of the car. They also uncovered a child’s backpack, which contained drugs, digital scales and bullets.

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) -- Authorities in Bainbridge are looking for a man accused of crashing his car while fleeing from a traffic stop and then leaving a young child alone in the wrecked vehicle.

Bainbridge Public Safety says just after 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, an officer pulled over a vehicle near the intersection of MLK Jr. Drive and Lamar Street. As the officer walked up to the vehicle, he said he smelled marijuana and saw a young child standing on the seat.

When the officer asked the driver to step out of the car, the driver, later identified as Aaron Jones, sped off. BPS says Jones ran a red light at MLK Jr. Drive and Sims Street before hitting a road sign and crashing into a fence at Wheat Avenue.

When police approached the car, the driver's door was open and Jones was nowhere to be found. The child was crying in the backseat but appeared to be uninjured.

Multiple witnesses told police they saw Jones get out of the wrecked car and run north towards the railroad tracks. Officers searched the area for Jones but were unable to find him.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a child’s backpack, which contained two baggies of spice, one baggy of ecstasy tablets, two baggies of powder cocaine, digital scales and eight 9mm bullets.

Investigators are actively searching for Jones and several warrants for his arrest have been obtained. If you have any information on Jones' whereabouts, please call Officer Jayson Myers or Investigator Mark Esquivel at 229-248-2038.
