LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) -- On Thursday, hundreds of athletes stepped on the court to participate in the Fall Special Olympics.
Schools from across four South Georgia counties teamed up Thursday for a basketball tournament. Teachers and parents said the event is a great way for these athletes to get out of the classroom and gives them a chance to bond and learn from one another.
"Every kid everywhere, regardless of what's going on with you, your physical disability, every body is special. These kids need to know that they are very very special, and they are loved," said parent Vonda Moran.
The Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority hosts the tournament every year. This year, organizers said nearly 300 students and teachers participated.
