VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- The Valdosta Police Department is investigating the murder of a man shot to death Tuesday night.

Christian Thomas, 20, was found at the Cumberland Court Homes apartment complex, located on the north side of Valdosta. Authorities were called out to the scene Tuesday after receiving reports of shots fired.

Many residents said they consider the apartment complex to be safe and quiet, and said they have never seen anything like this before.

"I walk out from my room to the kitchen, and I'm looking out the window, and I see police officers," said neighbor Raviean Patterson. "When this happened, it was a shell shock to us. Not saying that I live in the best neighborhood, I know, but we don't have these types of problems."

Police believe this to be an isolated incident, but some residents said their home is changed forever, and they are now reconsidering how safe the area really is.

"For my daughter to be nine years old, and look at me and be like, 'mommy what's going on?' that's not something you want to explain to somebody, somebody that you really try to shelter from that kind of environment," Patterson said.

Authorities said they believe Thomas knew the people responsible for his death.

"These are just horrible cases, and when it's a situation where it's a known offender, it can happen anywhere. When the target is a specific target, it can happen anywhere," said Interim Police Chief Leslie Manahan.

The case is still under investigation. VPD officials do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the area related to what happened, but ask everyone to always stay aware of what's going on around them.
