Demonstrators protest recent immigration crackdowns in the shadow of the Gadsden County Courthouse Monday
GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - More than a dozen demonstrators gathered in front of the Gadsden County Courthouse Monday afternoon to protest recent crack-downs on immigration by the president and governor’s administrations.
Honks sounded in solidarity as protesters held signs aloft saying “proud Mexican-American” while others waved American flags.
Aracely Cruz, a Florida State University and Tallahassee State College graduate attended the demonstration and said she was there to advocate for her community.
“I believe everyone deserves respect and dignity regardless of your legal status and background,” she said. “I will continue to use my freedom of speech to speak on these issues and bring unity to my community here in Gadsden County.”
Cruz said she is speaking out to create a bright future for her daughter.
“The immigrant community is vibrant, strong and diverse,” she said. “We will continue to lead together, educate and advocate.”
Recent protest in the Big Bend
Gov. Ron DeSantis recently announced plans to have more Florida officers enforce immigration laws and signed a bill targeting illegal immigration in the Sunshine State.
The protest comes after President Donald Trump spent the weekend in Washington D.C., meeting with the president of Poland, delivering remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference and attending the National Governors Association dinner and reception, according to the White House.
