WCTV Community Classroom - Kerrian Washington from Bond Elementary School

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Popcorn isn’t just a tasty treat; it can also be a powerful tool to create a fun and exciting learning environment.

That’s what Mrs. Kerrian Washington believes, and that’s why she wants a popcorn machine for her classroom.

Washington is April’s highlight for our WCTV Community Classroom segment. She teaches at Bond Elementary School in Tallahassee.

She said her goal every day is to provide a dynamic learning environment, and motivating young students is a part of that.

Washington is asking the community for donations to buy a popcorn machine. She said it will be used to reward students for positive behavior and outstanding attendance.

“It just really warms my heart when I see the kids excited about coming to school and reaching a goal,” Washington said. “When all the kids take responsibility for coming to school, to make sure that we’re able to have fun functions.”

Washington said she used to have two popcorn machines for her classroom, but they stopped working, and a new one would allow them to have popcorn and movie days, and different activities.

Our Community Classroom segment is WCTV’s partnership with DonorsChoose, which is a website that allows teachers to create an online project, or wishlist, to get things they need for their classrooms. Community Classroom is for teachers in the Big Bend and South Georgia.

The segment airs every third Wednesday of the month.
