LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - 05/12/2026 - The Florida Forest reports the Lafayette County South Canal fire is now 93% contained
05/10/2026 - The Florida Forest said the Lafayette County South Canal wildfire is still at 2,200 acres but now is 37% contained, according to a Sunday morning update.
Officials said four brush trucks have been employed along with 42 tractor-plow units and heavy dozers. The rain on Friday and Saturday was not enough to put out the fire but “conditions are conducive for minimal fire behavior.”
The forest service also reported that the air quality is good to moderate despite some smoke in the area. The community is advised to continue to avoid the fire area due to fire traffic.
05/09/2026 - The Florida Forest Service said the Lafayette County wildfire is at 2,200 acres and is 20% contained in a Saturday morning update.
The forest service said crews took advantage of the increased humidity and reduced winds to increase containment of the South Canal fire. Crews said they worked to remove unburned fuels between the line and the main body of the fire to increase containment. While light rain did fall over parts of the South Canal Fire on Friday, the forest service said it wasn’t enough to put it out.
“Firefighters are working directly along the fire’s edge where safe to do so and building line as wide as 100 feet in order to stop the spread of the fire as well as widening and improving roads in the area,” the Florida Forest Service said.
There are several burn bans across the Big Bend, including Leon County, Wakulla County, Hamilton County, Gadsden County, Madison County, Jefferson County, Franklin County, Liberty County, Calhoun County and Taylor County.
