TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - If you’ve ever watched a cooking competition, you know how tense they can be.
For Chef Jermaine Williams, he’s hoping to take home the grand prize from “The Favorite Chef” competition.
Williams stopped by the WCTV studio to prepare a dish that will have all seafood lovers swooning! He served up his take on a honey teriyaki salmon salad.
He is currently in 3rd place in the competition, and they will be reducing the number of participants from 15 to 10 on Thursday. He’s hoping to secure the number one spot by the end of the day and hopes to stay there for the remainder of the competition.
The winner of the competition will be featured on the cover of Taste of Home magazine, cook with celebrity chef Carla Hall, and take home $25,000.
Williams said if he wins, he’ll open up “THE DRIP CAFE” Fusion Cuisine and he’ll feed and hope to employ people who are homeless and are battling substance abuse.
Even if he doesn’t win, Williams wants to continue being a voice for those battle addiction and homelessness, as he has experience with both.
Williams said his mother, who passed away from breast cancer, was the person who inspired him to get into culinary arts. After her passing, Williams said he spiraled into substance misuse and homelessness.
Since recovering, he wants to be an advocate for others so that they can too get a second chance and says, “we do recover!”
Williams said now he looks to his fiancé, children, siblings, and grandchildren for inspiration.
Any money donated to the competition goes towards the James Beard Foundation which provides mentorships, leadership programs, and advocacy efforts for professionals.
