In the Spotlight: NorthFlora Collective shares tips on caring for orchids
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Keith and Rocky Pogge from NorthFlora Collective shared the following tips on caring for Phalaenopsis Orchids - The Elegant Moth Orchid.
Phalaenopsis orchids are native to Southeast Asia and get their nickname from the shape of their flowers, which resemble moths in flight. With their graceful arching stems and long-lasting blooms, they’re a favorite in homes, offices, and floral arrangements, said the plant enthusiasts.
Care:
- Phalaenopsis Orchids thrive in indirect light.
- Prefer temperatures between 65 and 80°F (18–27°C).
- Only need watering about once a week, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings.
- These orchids don’t grow in soil, instead, they prefer a well-draining mix like bark or sphagnum moss that mimics their natural habitat, where they cling to trees and absorb moisture from the air.
With proper care, Phalaenopsis orchids can bloom for months and may even rebloom once or twice a year. After flowering, cutting the spike above a node can sometimes encourage a second bloom on the same stem.
