Valdosta State focused on taking things one week at a time
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - When it comes to football, the good thing about the Gulf South Conference is that there are only four teams. The bad thing about the Gulf South Conference when it comes to football is that there are only four teams. Less games to win to make it to the postseason, but the margin for error is a lot smaller.
Valdosta State is 1-0 in conference play heading into this weekend’s regular season home finale against Delta State. A win, and next weekend’s game at West Florida will decide the GSC champ.
For the Blazers, it’s really just about taking things one week at a time. Head coach Graham Craig said he feels his team is really starting to peak at the right time, now it’s about focusing on the Statesman for Saturday.
“We’re going to go 1-0 this week, that’s been, since we came off that bye week, that’s been take it one week at a time and your goals are there,” he said Wednesday. “All focus is on Delta State this week. They’ve come to work, even when we were on that three game losing streak, the guys came to work to prepare. It’s been that same way, and they’re ready to go and prepare every day at practice. Really proud of the way this group’s responded over the last few weeks.”
Valdosta State has had a hard time finishing games, and said he’d like to see his guys finish a ball game as they look towards a good Delta State squad.
“Really explosive offense,” he said of the Statesman. “Two receivers that have both gotten Conference Player of the Week the last two weeks. Really explosive offense, two quarterbacks that have played at a really high level this season. Defensively, got a really good defense. They have a really good front, some experienced guys in the secondary and linebacker core. Overall, just a really good football team.”
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 4:00 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
