JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - A pair of saddle-billed storks, one of Africa’s rare bird species, have begun nesting and laying eggs for the first time at the North Florida Wildlife Center, according to the wildlife center.

Seraphine and her mate, Nosferatu, arrived at the NFWC from Busch Gardens last year.

NFWC Director Ryan Reines said the wildlife center is filled with hope and gratitude to have the opportunity to play a role in the pair’s conservation story.

“These magnificent birds are growing increasingly threatened in the wild and are becoming rarer in zoological institutions,” he said. “Every egg laid and every chick hatched is a meaningful advancement for the future of the species. This is what conservation looks like in real time.”

NFWC hopes to see tiny beaks peeking through Seraphine’s nest soon at the wildlife center.
