Valdosta State football looks ahead to Thursday’s final scrimmage
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Bazemore-Hyder Stadium is the home of the Valdosta State football team Saturdays in the fall. On Thursday night, the Blazers get a chance to get inside and suit up under the lights inside to wrap up spring practice.
For head coach Graham Craig, it’s been a spring he’s been happy with. He said there’s been battles at all positions, most notably at quarterback.
Jameson Holcomb has been out this spring with an injury, so it’s been a three way competition between guys new to the offense. Coach said he’s been pleased with their growth, and that includes former Valdosta High standout Tyrieke Wade.
For coach, this spring has been a lot different as he looks ahead to his second fall at the helm of the program. He notes they still have a lot of work to do, but having a year under their belts with familiar faces has made all the difference.
“We’re really improved the way we practice and we’ve gone back to getting that figured out earlier,” he said Tuesday. “A lot of it is the coaching staff being together, a lot of it is players being here for the spring, just having a full roster here with these position battles, these practices, being able to get the reps that we need in the spring. That’s been huge for us, being able to start those position battles right now in the spring instead of having to wait until the fall.”
Thursday’s scrimmage is set for a 6:00 start. It is free and open to the public.
